One other thing, I don’t know why they did it this way, but on the preamp knobs, they have “0-10” (zero through ten) instead of using dBv / dBu like most preamp knobs that I’m familiar with. I thought that the Monitor knob was for the front headphone jack only. I spent a bit of time trying to figure out why audio wasn’t coming out, it was because the Monitor knob was all the way down. The monitor knob on the front controls the volume of the line outputs on the back. There is one thing that I do not like about the unit. Green light on the front to let you know it’s powered on. The second input is switchable between Line and Inst offering more flexibility when working with multiple sources to maximize Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). Other Good ThingsĪs far as some of the other aspects of this unit, the mic preamp has plenty of head room. #Focusrite usb scarlett solo 2nd gen drivers installSo I had to install the Focusrite driver, uninstall the other one and all was well. #Focusrite usb scarlett solo 2nd gen drivers driverI plugged it in before installing the Focusrite driver and Windows automatically installed some sort of dummy driver that didn’t work. Even with a requested buffer size of 64, Reaper reported ~3.8ms input, ~3.8ms output, so roughly ~7.8ms round trip and still pops or clicks.Ĭonfiguring the audio interface for Windows was also more of a pain. I was testing this on my laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel i5 M 520 2.40 GHz, 8 GB RAM, SSD). There are occasional pops and clicks even with a requested buffer size of 64. Windows latency is a slightly different story. But I was only testing for a few minutes. I know what some of you might be thinking – does it click or pop? On my MacBook Pro, I did not hear clicks or pops – even with a requested buffer size of 16. The round trip latency has further been reduced to about ~3.2ms! Over USB! Absolutely fantastic! I’m thoroughly impressed, and very happy that I purchased this unit. It says it reduces the internal Core Audio buffer size, so I installed it and restarted my machine. I did some more reading on Focusrite’s website, and it looks like they have an “Optional Low Latency Installer” for OS X. It is hard to detect this low of latency except with a trained ear, and even then one might have a hard time. With a requested buffer size of 16, Reaper says latency is ~2.6ms input and ~2.3ms output, so about ~4.9ms round trip. When looking at audio interfaces I always want some screenshots on the latency. #Focusrite usb scarlett solo 2nd gen drivers proI plugged it in to my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro (OS X 10.11.4, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3), fired up my DAW (Reaper) and it just worked. I received my Focusrite Scarlett Solo today. There are a number of things I knew I could try with this, just to see if it works, and it was at a price point that I’m a little more comfortable with. But I didn’t want to choose to afford this, so I kept looking and ended up purchasing the Scarlett Solo (2nd Gen). The fact that Focusrite advertised latency statistics for a few different setups on their website was a good sign to me.įor what I was doing, I was initially looking at the Scarlett 18i20 as that would work the best for what I was hoping to do at my church. The 2nd generation line of products claimed “super low latency” I was like, sure, everyone claims that, but they hardly ever quantify it with examples. I started looking into it a little bit more. ![]() I recently was looking around and just so happened to notice that Focusrite had released a 2nd generation of their Scarlett product line. #Focusrite usb scarlett solo 2nd gen drivers softwareI’ve recently realized the potential of using computers and software plugins (I own the Waves Gold bundle and a number of individual plugins) to unlock a plethora of possibilities with all the available DSP plugins out there.Įvery once in a while, I casually go looking online for audio interfaces. As a sound engineer for my local church for the past 3+ years, I’m always trying to find ways to improve the setup we have. ![]()
